Sybase Backups

Backup:Sybase Backups is nothing but making copy of the database in for disaster recovery purpose. Dump command is used to take
the backup of the database.

Types of Backups avaiable in Sybase:
Default backup
Comrpessed Backup
Stripe Backup
Compressed Stripe Backup
Transaction Log Backup

Default backup: It is used to make the copy of the database same size as original.

Example:

dump database k2_update to ‘/opt/sap/dumps/full/k2_update20101112.sgz’

Compresses Backup: This compresses the database. Size of the compressed backup file is

lesser than the original size of the database.

Example:

dump database k2_update to ‘compres::/opt/sap/dumps/full/k2_update20101112.sgz’

Stripe Backup: If you want to store the back of the database more than one file then, we

use stripe backup.

Example:

dump database k2_update to '/opt/sap/dumps/full/k2_update20101112_stripe01of03.sgz'
stripe on '/opt/sap/dumps/full/k2_update20101112_stripe02of03.sgz'
stripe on '/opt/sap/dumps/full/k2_update20101112_stripe03of03.sgz'

Compressed Stripe Backup: Compressed Stripe Backup is used to shrink the size of stripes lesser than original stripe.

Example:

dump database k2_update to 'compress::/opt/sap/dumps/full/k2_update20101113_stripe01of03.sgz'
stripe on 'compress::/opt/sap/dumps/full/k2_update20101113_stripe02of03.sgz'
stripe on 'compress::/opt/sap/dumps/full/k2_update20101113_stripe03of03.sgz'

Transaction Log Backup: Used to make copy of the transaction log and removes the inactive portion of the log.

Example:

dump tran k2_update to '/opt/sap/logs/k2_update20101114.sgz'
